Angie Cheng- Week 3: One Positive Word a Day

My mom always reminds me to think of one positive thing when I wake up in the morning. My first thought is always, “Wow…school…what do I have to get done today🗿” and “oh shoot I woke up sorta late, can I get out of the house by 7:50 and walk to school by 8AM?”
If anything, I think about the negative side and just act pessimistic about things, especially if there is a quiz or test first thing in the morning. I’m probably like “I will probably fail,” or “oh well, whatever happens its all good hahaha.” Negative thoughts flow so much more easily and just more easy to reflect on yourself. Honestly, maybe positive word(s) can help me stay positive. Mindset! And if you know those “aesthetic blocks” with those inspirational quotes on it? Yeah, my mom has one in her room and always brings it up to me to show/tell me to think happy.
I guess this does tie to how language does influence your thinking and the way you feel throughout the day. My mood does get better after leaving the house and heading off to school in anticipation of friends and small highlights throughout the day. It’s just the matter of just how much work at the end of the day has accumulated that really drops my mood to the ground or if something small bugs me and I begin to overthink certain things. Maybe just trying to think more optimistically can help and I can attempt to think positively, even if it is a forced positive thought.
To end it off, I have a question for you guys! What do you guys think of first when you wake up?

Think positively! That is my message for you. I think that mindset really affects your mood and how you perceive things, which also affects your mindset and mood. I used to have a negative mindset and I was sad all the time, and now I try to have a more positive mindset, and I do think it helps. I am now generally more happy, and only slightly sad all the time. I also try to listen to music with a more positive meaning because I read somewhere that music also affects your mood. I personally prefer being happier than sad, so I am happy that I took the action to fix my mindset. To answer your question, when I wake up, I typically think about the dream I just had, because lately, my dreams have been really cool, like movies.
Your mother has given you great advice! I believe I am on the pessimistic side of things and it can really ruin your day if you’re so worried all the time. I think I heard someone say that you alone can decide whether you have a good or bad day, which mostly has to do with how you take in the events occurring around you. It’s all about perception! Truly, the negative tendencies are something I default to, but I remind myself that it doesn’t hurt to try and think positively. Something I also picked up from somewhere is to “lie to yourself until it becomes true.”

I also find it really hard to think positively in my day-to-day life. I can confirm the very first thing that I usually think of when I wake up in the morning is “Wow, I don’t want to get out of my warm bed to go to school.” It’s really hard for me personally to find the motivation to get up early in the morning. Having a good outlook on life will definitely help me find motivation to get up, but taking the time and energy to change my outlook on life is just as difficult. Hopefully one day I will be able to change my outlook on life as well as my inability to get up early.
I like thinking positively although things don't go right as I have patience as part of a factor. When I think positively I don't panic but instead calm down and that always works to fix the problem. Those aesthetic posters that your mom hangs makes her think positive but it is different for many as I like looking outside or the drawings on my wall to think "positive". To answer your question, the first thing I think of when I wake up is "oh its just another day".
I agree, it is so hard to think positively on the days you dread getting out of bed. For me personally, I like school because yk friends and nothing else I believe 😃. Weekends are meh cuz I barely have time to relax but yea they are better than the weekdays because of the ton of homework I have to complete after doing 6 hours of school. When I wake up in the morning I look at the time and calculate how much I have to yell at my brother for making me late because I'm such a good sister. 💀

I thought your post was insightful. To answer your question, the first thing I think when I am awake is usually “I want to go back to sleep” or “do I really need to get up?” I think the advice of thinking positive things when you wake up is really good advice because it helps you get in a better mood and makes you feel better about the rest of the day. I try to think positive thoughts before doing a presentation to prevent myself from becoming nervous. I have found that it does help me become more confident when speaking.
The first thing I think of when I wake up is, very sadly, school. I woke up today dreading going to school, to take that psychology test, to present in Spanish class. Honestly, there are so many things that can stress someone out once they wake up. But your mom’s advice is really good, because you need a positive mindset to start off your day. If I had woken up thinking “Wow, today I’m going to have a great day learning!” (which is hypothetically impossible) I would probably have started my day off with a good mood which would influence my day. Our mindset is very powerful and influential, it can entirely elevate or depress our attitude towards school or just life in general.
Sincerely,
Faith Tong
