Faith Tong (Week 4)- Music is super cool :D

 Music is super cool :D

by Faith Tong

Unfortunately, I have run out of brain cells to think about how language and power relate. So guess what? I decided to ask my mom for help! She explained to me that  language can be expressed through music, where through your music you can communicate your emotions and connect with people.  So I guess this is going to be what my blog is about for today! I have realized my biggest mistake is not asking my mom to help me on blog posts...

Not going to lie, I kind of expected my mom to relate language's power with music already. To give you some background information, my mom has always been interested in music since she was young. She started learning piano at only 3 years old (I know, shocking) and basically plays till this day. In addition, she loves singing so I guess that's why music was such an easy topic for her to relate to.

Anyways, back to how language can be expressed through music. According to my lovely mother, when you combine language and music, you get songs! Songs can convey meaning such as an individual's own personal experience, their emotions, and etc. Many of the songs we listen to today, ranging from pop, chill, rock, and numerous more genres all convey emotions such as happiness, love, sadness, desperation, heartbreak, and all that jazz!

So how is language in music form powerful? The messages and emotions conveyed through songs can allow people to relate to songs and connect with not only artists but also people with similar music tastes to them. In addition, music is a way for people to cope with life or problems in general. Listening to music can bring comfort and elevate one's emotions. Lastly, music comes in multiple languages as well, which helps us learn about different cultures' music.

Honestly, props all to my mom for her amazing idea (big dub for her)! So my question for you is: How has music impacted you? Also what kind of music do you guys like?

Hi Faith,
I looked at your title, and I immediately thought this was going to be a fun article to read. You didn’t disappoint! To answer your question, I listen to music from a large variety of genres, but I usually listen to a lot of electronic music. A lot of the times I listen to music to cheer me up or make me more energetic when I am tired. I also often listen to quiet instrumental songs to prevent myself from being distracted when I am doing my assignments.

Hi Faith,
I also agree with how language can be expressed through music, especially their message. Music is essentially language most of the time and that is why it can communicate stories to its audience. I heard somewhere that music can influence your mood and mindset, so now I try not to listen to songs with bad meanings in case it is true. Music does affect my moods. My favorite type of music is happy pop. An example of this type of song is Heartshaker by Twice, which is currently the song I am listening to right now. I used to play piano and flute which was nice because I could play the songs I liked on my instruments.
I thought this topic was pretty creative as I never really thought about how powerful music is. I agree that music is an influential way of spreading messages, ideology, and feelings as it is universal in humanity as it can be used as a medium of self-expression. I also can relate to how music can influence emotions as listening to depressive music on bad days has consistently worsened my mood. Likewise, playing the piano for a long time usually makes me tired.

Hey Faith
I honestly cannot go a day without listening to my favorite music. The funny thing is, is that my favorite songs change every few weeks, so I never really have a favorite. I’ve grown up on instrumental and orchestral music, having no lyrics. Being a piano player myself from a young age, I have grown to enjoy purely piano music, especially covers of pop music, lofi, etc. (maybe not so much classical or baroque because they can be boring sometimes). Of course, music taste can change and from purely instrumental music, I’ve been enjoying a lot more k-pop, edm, hiphop, jazz, and have been gradually opening up to more genres.

Hi Faith,
I used to really dislike music when I was younger, I remember getting songs stuck in my head all the time and it annoyed the bejeezus out of me. Now I’ve come to appreciate the beauty of music and its effects on the mind. In my extremely unprofessional opinion, music is a type of outlet for emotions. I can’t think of a single song without any type of emotional appeal tied to it. As a theater nerd, I love seeing how different people choose to express themselves. What kind of music do you listen to?

Hi Faith,
Music is a pleasure and relaxing sensation for your ears just as people do meditation to rest their minds for a bit. Like seriously one day without listening to some kind of music I feel tired and feel like something is missing. Just as I typing this comment , I am listening to music as I feel it helps me better in thinking. Just like how dancers vibe to music or people who don't know how to dance bob their heads when listening to music. It really gets the emotions moving as someone who is having a bad day may be listening to heavier music. Opposed to someone that is powerless and feel hopeless they might listening to something that gives them encouragement.

Hi Faith,

I love your blog and the information you brought up throughout. Music is the best therapist for me at least because it allows me to be alone and blast my music and just feel the vibes you know? Music actually is probably the only reason why I liked quarantine as I expanded my music taste and had AirPods in during every class. I also don't like a specific genre or artist because then it limits my taste in music and allows people to judge what I like LOL.

Sincerely,
Mrinmayee

Hey Faith,
I love music. Everyday, music makes its way around to me no matter what. Though my music taste slowly changes through phases, some songs will never get old. I enjoy listening to old classical Cantonese songs that my parents would always listen to, and then transition to different genres of music. I think as of right now, my top song genre is J-Division.

Hi Faith,
I enjoyed reading your blog! And yes, I love music a lot; it's my outlet when I am sad or upset. It helps me contain myself. Music has this extraordinary power that the genre of music you are listening to can influence you to feel or act a certain way. Personally, my music influences me to be calm and to ignore all negative aspects of life. I enjoy listening to alternative, and my favorite band is Deftones. Alos props to your mom’s idea!
