Superbowl Sunday - February 13
Thing 1: OMG DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THE GAME ON SUNDAY BETWEEN THE RAMS AND BENGALS
Thing 2: yea lol, but it's valentine's day weekend
Thing 1: PFFT, WHO CARES
Thing 2: Apparently this thing does 👀(points to girlfriend/boyfriend)
That one Sunday where the final two teams play against each other is exciting for well...everyone who wants to watch the actual game, but I get excited about the ads and halftime because it's the only fun part (Sorry to the people who actually like watching the game LOL). Everyone knows that we get new ads during NFL season and the producers of these ads have the pressure to make them good because literally, everyone is watching them. I usually always thought that ads aren't effective and the companies are spending so much just to play a 30-second video for the crowd to go on their phones and talk over it, but after seeing an ad from Taco Bell in the theater, I changed my mind. We were at Taco Bell three weeks later and my dad still remembers the burrito that was on-screen and asked the workers for it, now why is this? It was appealing (OOOH AAAH) Some commercials use ethos, others use pathos, and very few use logos. These appeals make the commercial more persuasive and credible which in turn makes them powerful (BAM connection).
Getting back to NFL commercials, Taco Bell featured Doja Cat in their ad and as everyone should know, Doja Cat got really popular with Tiktok, so of course, almost everyone knows her and her music. Squarespace.com featured Zendaya as Sally selling seashells who didn't get much business until after making her website on Squarespace. Something I thought that was interesting for that ad was the letter theme "s" because the companies name starts with s and they chose the tongue twister which is a tongue twister due to the many s's that are presented. They obviously didn't go through so much of finding adjectives starting with "s" for nothing. They did this so it was unique to the audience and they will remember the company when they are in need to make a website.
The Taco Bell and Squarespace commercials are eye-catching because they feature famous people who we love and enjoy. I'll always want to watch NFL Halftime shows if they feature my favorite artist. Same idea, different application with ads. It's almost like doing your chores before your mom asked and after. I don't know about y'all, but I refuse to do anything after someone asks me to do it if I'm already doing it. Yk? aw shucks we're done with connecting language and power after this blog. sigh 😔

I really enjoyed reading your post. My sister and I often judge commercials on how well they work as advertisements (which is a very fun activity to do if you are bored during a commercial break when watching something on the TV). Personally, I enjoy watching advertisements because I like how they often make creative stories in order to sell a product. I find it especially funny when the advertisement’s story gets so complicated that I have no idea what product it is selling till the very end of the advertisement.
I appreciate the anecdote you presented at the beginning of your blog! Advertisements indeed have the power to attract customers or garner interest in a service or product. It can be really interesting as to how they do it; I remember the time we spent analyzing advertisements in class. Various elements including fonts, sizing, colors, and other design elements besides simple writing (as ethos, logos, and pathos) affect the effectiveness of an advertisement. It’s no wonder how companies with memorable advertisements usually have a good amount of sales. Typically, you'd want something simple, straightforward, yet compelling, and eye-catching to advertise a product.

When I used to watch television as a little girl, I would actually watch the advertisements as well; not because I really enjoyed watching them in particular, but because I thought that they were an actual part of the show that I was watching. Most advertisements are pretty interesting when you really think about it. Now that I’m older, I typically consider the different rhetorical devices that advertisements use and how credible the product that they are advertising seems. Do you think that advertisements are worth watching?
The people who fund for advertisements want to make the product as appealing as can be. I remember there were some ads that were weird or meant to funny or ran along the basis of having a slogan. This really is a marketing factor that registers the brand or product into your mind. I remember there was just a lays ad that featured Rick Astley and it was just funny in general. Such slogans common to us might be "15 minutes could save you 15% or more on car insurance" or "we are farmers ba da da dum".
I really like how you pointed out that we usually don’t pay attention to ads and just distract ourselves from seeing some boring advertisement. But that Taco Bell ad must have been really good! Most food-related advertisements always make my mouth water. They can use slow motion, a catchy song, a good price, and it can already make my stomach grumble. The ways advertisements creatively use language in different ways can prompt viewers to want to try out their food and not just ignore the ad as if it was nothing. Unfortunately, I don’t always believe those ads, since it’s kind of like expectation versus reality. In the ad, the hamburger looks so big and juicy, but once I actually get the burger it looks deflated and smushed. In conclusion, food advertisements need to be more realistic (I don’t want to get scammed again).
Sincerely,
Faith Tong
I also LOVE judging ads. Even those Grammarly ads…I somehow end up unconsciously memorizing them and repeating them when the advertisement pops up again. Some ads are really able to present themselves well and end up being entertaining, similar to the Taco Bell ad that you mentioned. Of course, the ads can really show how good the product is, but can end up being way llore unexpected with the final results. Anyways, “writing is not that easy, that is why Grammarly can help!”
