I always catch myself humming a tune of a recent song that I have been listening to. Right now? It’s between Explore by Shoose or For my Stella by Visty. I feel like our brains all have a designated place that keeps songs that we have been exposed to and when we hear it again, we all go “OMG! I have heard this song before?!?!?!?!?!?!”
Over quarantine, I recalled trying to make a playlist for the car rides because my mom and I would drive around places. I began to dive a bit into old 1970-1990’s Cantonese songs. Oh. My. Gosh. When finding songs, it felt like a whole part of my brain got unlocked after every song that was rediscovered. I recall mentally screaming because that song was a banger. The memories of my parents overplaying these songs on the T.V. in the living room as a child was actually hitting. I’d find myself humming the melodies and even muttering the lyrics listening to it just once after way too many years. I’ve definitely been exposed to some songs still because of my dad’s blasting music, but some songs were absolutely nostalgic because I forgot some song would exist.
OMG ITS LIKE THAT UH UH CAT AND DOG SOUND ON TIKTOK THAT WAS TRENDING A WHILE AGO! I REMEMBER MYSELF MENTALLY STRUGGLING TO REMEMBER WHAT THE SONG WAS AND WHEN I FOUND THE CANTO SONG ON SPOTIFY, I WAS LIKE “OH YO YEAH IT’S THIS SONG LESGO I FOUND IT!”
I definitely think that songs are important aspects to memory only because they truly open up parts of your life that either you have forgotten or just make you recall different memories. It’s also just fun I don’t know!
To end this off, what songs have a nostalgic/memorable hold on you?

I also often think about songs I've been listening to recently, especially when I'm trying to sleep or in the middle of an important test. I also hate it when I try to remember a song, but can't remember any lyrics, sometimes only remembering lalallalaallallala or oooooooooooo. The most nostalgic songs for me are probably Hey, Soul Sister by Train and Want U Back by Cher Lloyd. I probably listened to those songs over 100 times when I was a child. They remind me of first grade when I lived with my dad, which was a nice time.
Your blog post made me scroll through my old YouTube music playlists and I totally felt a wave of nostalgia, so I thank you for that. One song I remember fondly is Saib - in your arms, it kind of just has that nostalgic vibe. I think I used to listen to it on repeat when doing homework when I was in sixth grade to middle school. Other songs include general pop songs like Taylor Swift and Bruno Mars, not because I deliberately listened to them all those years ago, but because my mom would always blast them during car ride and on road trips. In general, songs that have memorable, yet simple melodies tend to stick. I find myself remembering those melodies but not their artist or song name.

I hope you had a stupendous day. Teehee. I have an entire playlist of songs my parents used to listen to on my Spotify account as it brings back the old days of not worrying about school, college, ec’s, etc. Listening to these songs and discovering new ones is like the best feeling ever as it becomes my favorite song for 2 weeks and then gets added to a big pile of songs. Sometimes I feel like my brain sorts music in their own folders and they all get dumped into one big pile which I then recover after a while. This process keeps going on and on and on and it just never stops.
Sincerely,

There are many times when I’m listening to the radio in the car and they start playing old pop songs. While some people might find these songs either outdated or cheesy, I actually like these types of songs for the “nostalgia factor.”Within the last couple of years, I started looking for 20’s pop songs to play them on the guitar. The songs that are the most nostalgic to me is Cool Kids from EchoSmith and most Katy Perry songs.
It is actually surprising that you made a post about this as during the past week for swimming we couldn't get into the water for swim because the heater broke. As compensation for the practice we lost, we did some dryland exercises. Throughout the dryland exercises some people decided to put on some songs and most of them were early 2000s while many people just started singing or humming them throughout practice.
I love the songs I listened to during my childhood. I love songs such as Uptown Funk, Closer, Bang Bang, all those jams! I found myself relistening to these songs a lot, especially this year. I don’t know if it’s because I’m getting old and now I like the “good old days” or I’m just tired of the music in my playlists. Old songs also give back pleasant feelings and memories. I always find myself smiling and singing like an idiot to my favorite old jams, and it just helps me remember the happy moments I had when I was little. You know what, I might be getting old because I keep referring to “when I was little” but anyways, cool spotify playlist!
Sincerely,
Faith Tong
